DivX files are based on MPEG4 technology an advanced version of the MPEG2 format used with current DVD movies. DivX files need far less disc capacity to support high resolution moving pictures and stereo sound. With similar resolution and picture quality to a DVD, one DivX movie can be compressed and fully recorded onto a 700MB CD disc.

There is a growing range of DivX material available for download over the internet which can be downloaded and burnt to CD or DVD disc, then played back from DVD players / recorders with DivX playback.
